The 2017 AFL season is finally here and footy fans everywhere are ready to get underway.  Thursday night kicks off the opening game of the year with Richmond Tigers v Carlton Blues.  The Tigers will be looking to get an early start on the season, while Carlton will throw everything they have to fend off a tenacious Richmond side.  All will be left out on the ground once the first bounce rises, and no one will look back when it begins. Here are our AFL fantasy tips for tonight’s clash!

Ruck

Toby Nankervis $5,700

New Tiger Nankervis is looking the goods as the number one ruckman in the absence of Hampson.  He is working hard up and down the ground, utilising his tank to get forward against his opposition ruck.  With no third man up to get between these two Giants, watch them take ownership of the contest and look to hammer home an early advantage.

Forwards

Jack Riewoldt $6,600

Looking fit after the pre-season, Riewoldt looks ready to take the game head on.  He is showing hunger for forward pressure.  Using the ball well and hitting the scoreboard in pre-season matches he looks as though it could give himself some much-needed confidence.  If he is able to get off the leash early and push up through the midfield slightly he could be ready to blow the game wide open.

Sam Lloyd $6,000

Although he played all three of the JLT Community Series contest’s he only had the one game over 60Fp.  He has the potential to crack a game open and find plenty of the ball.  If Lloyd has any opportunity to find the football early in the match he will look to link up plenty by foot.  Add a couple of goals against his name he comes home with a handy score in a lacklustre forward group in this fixture.

Midfield

Josh Caddy $7,700

Since moving to the Tigers, Caddy has been throwing his body around in a good way.  He has been running head first to get the ball and gliding across the pack to sneak goals early on in his Richmond career.  The attributes the Cat’s liked about him have transferred into the new environment and looks a likely target to rack up some much-needed points in the midfield slot.

Brandon Ellis $8,000

Coming off a less than satisfying year, Ellis will be looking to bounce back.  With the addition of Prestia and Caddy through the midfield for Richmond, it could free up Ellis just enough to get him back to his natural game.  Showing plenty of quality over the years he will get back to his best, is this the season where it all clicks back together? Let’s hope it all goes to plan.

Dustin Martin $9,500

The mercurial man himself has already shown in the offseason that he has his mind focused on the season ahead.  Picking up where he left off at the end of 2016, Dusty looks ready to fire again in the coming season.  A more expensive option through the midfield in tonight’s contest but the risk for reward is surely greater in the Martin direction.  More play towards Richmond in the contest will do justice in a big score.

Defenders

Caleb Marchbank $3,500

Latest addition to the Blues line-up has looked solid in the early pre-season.  If he can continue on the form he has begun with at his new club then we should expect big things.  Short priced at $3,500 and in the defensive position this is a great way to save salary cap space and get a decent score in the process.

Kade Simpson $9,100

One of the defensive rocks for the Blues he is looking top-notch.  His run and gun game off the half back line will be utilised against Richmond to try break the lines and get out over the back.  Points are well scored by Simpson with his ability to intercept mark, prominent disposal by foot and finding plenty of the footy for his team.  Well worth the price tag.
