We kick off this season with the defending premiers, Richmond up against a Carlton side who will be looking to improve on their six wins last year. It doesn’t get any easier for the blues with star defender Sam Docherty out for the season and a Richmond side who look just as good as they did in September last year. With that being said, there is still plenty of good value around:
Shai Bolton ($4,000) RICH
With Daniel Rioli sidelined for the start of the season Bolton looks to get a start in the Tigers round one lineup. At only $4,000, he looks like the best value of the round! Only a handful of games to his name, Bolton is a fresh-faced, dynamic player who will feed on the crumbs in the forward line all night. Look for him to make the most of tiring defenders late in the match and jag a few goals for you.
Jack Riewoldt ($7,100) RICH
I’m backing our top-end forward in this match to start the season well. Riewoldt was very selfless last year in the forward line and was a big reason in helping his team towards the flag. In a match where I think it will be quite one-sided, you need to have Richmond players in your lineup. He will be in the thick of things with plenty of ball and hopefully a few goals!
Marc Murphy ($10,000) CAR
Going with the experience here. Murphy has been a consistent performer throughout his career and will once again need to lead from the front. In a young Blues side it will be up to him to control the pace of play and keep Richmond’s rampant midfield at bay. He averaged over 100 fantasy points last season and had a season high 139 in this same fixture last year. He is a paramount part of the Blues if they are any hope of keeping up with the Tigers.
Kane Lambert ($8,500) RICH
Lambert really came into his own towards the end of last year culminating in a solid all round grand final performance. Coming off 4 goals in his last pre season match, look for him to see plenty of the footy and be in and around the hard contests. Scored 100+ fantasy points on 6 occasions last year and looks like a viable option at $8.5K.
There’s also a guy by the name of Dustin Martin – if you can afford him in your lineup, he may be worth splashing some of your cash.
Kade Simpson ($9,300) CAR
Again taking some experience in the Carlton mix here. Kade Simpson, along with Murphy will need to get their hands on the footy as much as possible this year. He had some big games for the Blues last season and averages just under 100 fantsay points per game. In a match where the Carlton defensive line will get a work out, Simpson looks the most likely to distribute the ball out of trouble.
Nick Vlastuin ($5,000) RICH
At $5K Vlastuin looks a steal. He got better and better as the season went on last year and showed great composure in pressure situations. Like many of the Tigers players, being part of a premiership winning side will only lift his confidence. I am expecting a big year from him and can hopefully score you some valuable (and cheap) fantasy points.
Matthew Kreuzer ($10,000) CAR
Notice a trend here? I’m banking on Carlton’s experienced players to have the biggest impact in the match for their team. Kreuzer has been a quality ruckman over the years and looks to have the measure of his opposite number in this match, Toby Nankervis. Kreuzer had one of his best games of the season against Richmond in this fixture last year scoring 40 more fantasy points than Nankervis.
