A new premiership favourite in Richmond has emerged and the Carlton Football Club has won three games in a row for the first time since Britain voted for Brexit (seems like recently but that was 2016!). A viral “Shooting Stars” video of Mark Blivcas doing a dive was amusing and Moneyball provide over $110,000 in guaranteed prize money over 3 big days of AFL! Let’s recap the big winners of the round.
We start with Friday night where Richmond has started it’s run from the clock tower at Flemington by disposing of an injury ravaged Collingwood by 22 points. The last time these two teams met, Collingwood had a fantasy field day but Richmond turned this around. Dustin Martin lead the scoring with a massive 133 fantasy points and Bachar Houli celebrated his 200th game with a 119 point effort. Jordan de Goey was the spark for Collingwood with a 119 point effort in a slate that he was surprisingly only 11% owned in the forward line.
Over 1900 entries in the Friday Night Special and it took a single bullet from ‘Wootsieboy’ to take out the 1st prize of $3,000. ‘Laminedor’ was just behind in 2nd place with ‘bonfj15’ in 3rd spot. ‘Wootsieboy’ had a great lineup that included Dustin Martin at 16.5% ownership and Jayden Short who scored 106 at the cheap salary of $5,700. 7 Tigers made into his lineup which was a great turnaround after their fantasy effort back in Round 2.
Onto Saturday and haven’t the good people of South Australia have turned on their football teams. Two losses from Port and Adelaide have left their finals hopes on a string. What was impressive is that Carlton gave Adelaide a little bit of a touch up both on the scoreboard and on the fantasy front. Patrick Cripps (141FP), Kade Simpson (142FP) and Marc Murphy (128FP) were all at their vintage best, whilst a very popular play in Doulton Langlands rewarded owners (over 43% of them) with a great day of 75 points.
Moneyball posted a big $40,000 Saturday slate which over 2650 entries were received for the contest. For user ‘15414308’ it was the combination of Cripps, Simpson, Langlands and Paul Ahern(!) at under 2% for fantasy score of 84 that provided the glue to a massive total of 914 points and the first prize of $4,000. Highly ranked Daily Fantasy Rankings users in ‘chriseddy999’ and ‘Broady4_’ then proceeded to fill the rest of the top 10 of the leaderboard for a fair collect themselves.
Sunday was billed to a massacre of the Suns by the Bombers, but they only won by the skin of their teeth and the other two games were actually pretty lackluster from a fan’s point of view. This didn’t stop just under 2000 entries into Moneyball’s Sunday $30,000 contest sweating out popular Bombers plays late. What proved to be a very good Sunday was for DFR member ‘cottmaa’ who is no stranger to the leaderboards on Moneyball. He took both 1st, 3rd and 4th positions on the leaderboard for a collect alone of over $4,900! What got ‘cottmaa’ over the line was to avoid most of the Essendon players and having a good mix of value plays with high ceiling studs. Jarrod Witts (126FP), Jack Macrae (127FP) and the emergence of Andrew Brayshaw (106FP) at 3% ownership and throw in a ceiling game from Aaron Naughton (95FP at 3%) were key plays in the winning lineup.
We have now reached the ‘junk time’ point of the season where players mooted to play for their careers now come to the fore and the shut down of other players due to injury. This should create an added element of DFS play and Moneyball will be back with more prize money for this week’s AFL. Well done to the winners and good luck this weekend!
