After a couple tight days of test match cricket, the Aussies ran away with a comprehensive victory over England in the first Ashes test. A combination of good bowling and poor batting lead to the demise of the tourists as they lost their last 4 wickets for 40 runs in the second innings. David Warner and debutante Cameron Bancroft completed the rout as they chased the remaining runs without losing a wicket.
England will be putting all that behind them as we turn our attention to the Adelaide Oval for the 2nd test. Adelaide will host the first ever Day/Night Ashes test match and will provide an awesome spectacle for everyone watching. Interestingly, this has been tipped to be England’s best chance of winning with the pink ball expected to be hooping around come the evening sessions.
As the 2nd test fast approaches I have singled out one player who’s performance, or lack of, will have a monumental impact on the outcome of the match.
Joe Root (England)
“Cut the head off a snake, and the body will die”. Australia will need to reduce the impact that Joe Root has on this match to give themselves the best chance of winning. If Australia can target Root and get rid of him cheaply, they will not only go a long way to taking a 2-0 series lead, but the knock on effect throughout the English side could spell the end for the tourists. Mitchell Starc left as big an imprint on the first test as anyone after hitting Root in the helmet with a perfectly directed bouncer. Root was left rattled, as Australia gained the ascendancy and rolled through the English batting lineup. That moment will still be in the back of every English player’s mind as they head into this next battle. Joe Root is the nucleus of this team and aside from the obvious effect he can have on the scoreboard, his output in this match could lift the whole morale of the English dressing rooms. If their skipper can stand up and take the fight back to the Aussies, then maybe, just maybe, the snake may bite back.
