This possible rule change could allow some teams to sport new-look helmets as well as classics – ones that bring back the nostalgic look.
In the past seven years, the NFL has had a rule that only allows every team to use a single styled helmet throughout its current season. However, according to reports, this rule could be changed soon. This will allow some teams to experiment with how their helmets look as well as allowing other teams to bring back the classic helmets.
Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians was asked during an interview if the Creamsicle helmet will be used along with their new uniform in the seasons to come should the rule be changed. ‘Once the helmet rule changes next year, we might have some Creamsicles and some throwbacks, which I think, are the best uniforms in the league’, he said.
His answer was intriguing to say the least because before this, there were no news (not even rumours) that the NFL was deciding whether to change the rule or not. Before the rule was implemented in 2013, the Buccaneers used to wear their Creamsicle throwbacks all the time. They used to wear a white helmet that went really well with their Creamsicle uniform. They then decided to switch to a pewter helmet that didn’t exactly blend well with the uniform. But because of the new rule, couldn’t alternate helmets and ended up not wearing the Creamsicle uniform entirely.
Despite news that this rule could be changed or even removed, the NFL has officially released a statement on the matter. ‘There will be no change for the 2020 season’, they said. ‘There are ongoing discussions for a potential change for the 2021 season, but no decisions have been made’.
The rule was put in place with players’ safety as the league’s priority.
In other news, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said that he was cleared of the coronavirus and is doing well. ‘I’m doing well. I was cleared yesterday’, said the coach in an interview. ‘It’s been quite a process. You spend a lot of time trying to learn as much as you can about it. We’re certainly seeing it on the news 24/7. So I’ve been fortunate. You stay inside like everyone’s doing, and you find ways to pass the time. We had a competition committee meeting the other day on teleconference. But I’m feeling a lot better. And unfortunately, my appetite didn’t dissipate at all during that time. You know, you watch a lot of Netflix, then you go on to Twitter, and you see everyone else is watching the same shows’.
Payton now advocates for following the proper procedures to avoid infection. ‘We’re not invincible, and every one of us certainly can catch this thing’, he said. ‘We’ve got politicians, athletes — you name it, they’ve caught it. Prince Charles caught it, right? So it doesn’t matter if you live in a castle or you live in an apartment’.
